Published in his seminal 1885 work, The White Horses of the West of England, this illustration appearing on page 39, captures the "Rude Man" of Dorset.

Plenderleath was a man of the cloth and a master of the chalk, obsessed with the "hill-side banners" of Old Britain. His technical drawings highlight details often lost in modern photography, reflecting a time when scholars first debated if the Giant was a Saxon deity, a Roman Hercules, or a tribal symbol of defiance. This design isn't just a hill figure—it’s a piece of historiography. It’s for the modern explorer who values the grit of the original discovery and the ink-and-paper legacy of Britain’s most provocative chalk hill figure.

A Victorian lens on an ancient enigma.
